Aussie Slang

  1. Air Con = Air Conditioner
  2. All over the show = disorganized; in chaos or disarray
  3. Arvo = Afternoon
  4. Aussie = Australian (pronounced ‘Ozzie’)
  5. Avo = Avocado
  6. Baz = shorthand for Barry
  7. Brekkie = Breakfast
  8. Capsicum = Red Pepper
  9. Coriander = Cilantro
  10. Date = Butt
  11. Dusty = Hungover
  12. Eskie = Cooler Box 
  13. Extra Tasty Cheese = Extra Sharp Cheddar Cheese
  14. Fairy Floss = Cotton candy
  15. Flat White = Coffee w/ Milk
  16. Flick it to me = send/email it to me
  17. Fringe = Bangs (Hair)
  18. Good on ya = Good for you
  19. Have a go = try it
  20. Have a think = to think about something
  21. Holiday = vacation
  22. Hoon = A young, obnoxious person...particularly someone who drives like a jackass, doing burnouts, donuts, and speeding
  23. Hundreds & Thousands = Sprinkles / Jimmies 
  24. Icy Pole = Popcicle
  25. Joggers = Sneakers
  26. Kiwi = New Zealander  
  27. Lift = Elevator (what, were these people colonized by the Brits or something...)
  28. Mackers = McDonald's
  29. Mozzie = Mosquito
  30. Pom, Pommy = word for Englishman; supposedly comes from Pomegranate, which was the color they turned in the sun in Australia.
  31. Removalist = Furniture removal people
  32. Ripper = Great, terrific
  33. Rubbish = Garbage
  34. Shaz, Shazza = shorthand for Sharon
  35. She'll be right = It'll be okay
  36. Sultana = Raisan
  37. Sunnies = Sunglasses
  38. Sweet F.A. = Nothing or zero, as in “He did Sweet F.A. on the project; I did everything myself.” Also said as ‘Sweet F*ck All’
  39. Ta = Thank you
  40. Tasty Cheese = Cheddar Cheese
  41. Texter = Marker
  42. Uni = University

  3. Hi Sharon! As an Aussie now living in NJ, I reckon this is a great list! I am trying to do exactly the same for my new blog except the inverse! BTW, for me 'Baz" is short for Barry (my brother-in-law's name: s'times also Bazza) but maybe Brians use this as well? Not sure. Bonza= fantastic/wonderful.

  5. As a Kiwi, raisins and sultanas are not the same thing! Both are dried grapes, but different varieties and taste different to each other.
